DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship Requirements

To qualify for the DAAD Leadership in Africa Scholarships, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application that allows admission to a master’s program at a recognized university in Germany
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2nd class upper division level

The scholarship targets two distinct groups:

  1. Highly qualified refugees with refugee status and the necessary qualifications for master’s studies in Germany. Requirements include:
  • Having refugee status granted before April 2, 2023, in their host countries
  • Being from Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, or Mauritania
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application
  1. Highly qualified graduates from Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, or Mauritania with the qualifications for master’s studies in Germany. Requirements include:
  • Citizenship of Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, or Mauritania
  • Residence in Benin, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, or Mauritania
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree at the time of application

Please note the following:

  • Applicants with a degree in Medicine can apply for Public Health or Biomedical Master related programs only; funding is not available for a Master’s program in Medicine.
  • Specific DAAD scholarship programs exist for candidates from artistic disciplines and architecture (refer to separate scholarship offers in the scholarship database).

DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship Duration and Reward

  • Before the study program commences, a German language course (lasting up to 6 months) will be provided in Germany. The course covers test fees for a German language certificate (TestDaF or DSH test), pocket money, and accommodation (only during the language course).
  • Monthly scholarship payments of 934 EURO.
  • Comprehensive health, accident, and private/personal liability insurance in Germany.
  • Travel Allowance.
  • Annual study allowance.
  • Participation in the mandatory training program LEAD!
  • Potential monthly rent subsidy and monthly allowance for accompanying family members (spouse and/or children), if applicable.

Required Documents

To apply, candidates must be prepared to submit the following documents:

  1. Completed Online DAAD application form (accessible on the DAAD portal).
  2. Curriculum vitae (max. 3 pages) detailing your academic journey, prior scholarships, current address, and employment history. Please utilize the European specimen form available at https://europa.eu/europass/en.
  3. Write a letter of Motivation (1-3 pages) outlining your academic/professional objectives and personal motivations for pursuing the intended study project. Please review our Important Scholarship Information / Section B, Point 1.
  4. Complete the DAAD Form “Study course profile” (specify 3 Master’s programs). Note that DAAD does not consider programs with tuition fees.
  5. Evidence of language proficiency required for the chosen master’s programs.
  6. A university degree certificate indicating final grades, along with transcripts for all study years, including a breakdown of individual grades and an explanation of the grading system.
  7. Copies of your passport or national identification card, including the biodata page and any documents indicating your current residence status.
  8. For refugees: UNHCR registration or official proof of asylum granted by relevant authorities.
  9. Any additional documents you believe are pertinent to your application (e.g., employment/internship certificates, prior scholarships, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, previous admissions to German master programs, etc.).

To apply for the DAAD Leadership for Africa Scholarship, interested and eligible applicants should adhere to the following steps:

  2. Register for an account on the DAAD portal.
  3. Complete the online application using the DAAD portal.
  4. Download and fill out the online application form.
  5. Compile all required application documents.
  6. Translate documents if they are not already in German or English.
  7. Scan paper documents (excluding references) and save them in PDF format. Note that only PDF files can be uploaded to the portal.
  8. Upload the completed application form and other required documents in PDF format to the portal. Ensure that any translations are uploaded alongside the original documents.
  9. Submit the uploaded application documents online through the DAAD portal.
  10. Applicants must be submitted exclusively via the DAAD portal. Applications sent through other channels or to different authorities will not be considered.
  11. Preselected candidates will receive invitations for (digital) interviews with an independent selection committee comprising university professors.
