Position Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY

The Press Secretary is the organization’s lead contact for all press and is responsible for developing, implementing, and integrating a broad range of communications and media relations activities supporting NALEO Educational Fund’s mission, vision, and priorities.  This position will collaborate with and report to the National Director of Communications and collaborate with the Senior Policy Communications Manager, Deputy Director of Digital Strategies, and Deputy Creative Director.  The position calls for attentive multitasking in a fast-paced media environment, creative thinking, and an astute understanding of American politics and the policy issues important to NALEO Educational Fund.  This is a full-time, non-exempt position, ideally located in Los Angeles, CA or Washington, D.C.  Additional locations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Annual salary is commensurate with experience.  Work schedule flexibility is needed to respond to media inquiries and pressing developments in a timely manner. Some travel is required, consistent with public health guidelines and standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee all aspects of media relations
  • Serve as a liaison between the organization and the press
  • Gather information and provide media guidance to the organization from a national media perspective
  • Leverage existing relationships and cultivate new ones with relevant journalists, editorial boards, and other appropriate outlets to generate broader coverage of NALEO Educational Fund’s activities, mission, and objectives
  • Build and manage a comprehensive media database
  • Manage and run the organization’s e-updates via our mail distribution system
  • Organize media events, including press conferences, briefings, and more
  • Monitor legislative and public policy issues, which directly affect NALEO Educational Fund and may result in media inquiries
  • Create and implement media strategies that draw attention to the organization’s policy issue priorities
  • Seek pro-active media opportunities, including op-ed placements and television spots for NALEO Educational Fund spokespersons
  • Partner with the Senior Policy Communications Manager, Deputy Director of Digital Strategies, and Deputy Creative Director to implement strategic content dissemination and digital media assets
  • Facilitate media interviews with appropriate spokespersons and prepare relevant briefing memoranda, talking points, and other supporting documents
  • Provide media coaching and interview training to staff, as appropriate
  • Serve as an organizational spokesperson as needed
  • Compile media clips and create reports outlining ad value metrics
  • Adhere to attendance and punctuality standards of the organization
  • Travel as required, consistent with public health guidelines and standards

QUALIFICATIONS – KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Communications, Journalism, English, or related field preferred
  • Four to seven years of experience in a similar role
  • Demonstrated media relations background with a minimum of two election cycles of communications experience
  • Must have active contacts and previous experience working with national reporters
  • History of developing and executing highly successful public relations strategies and campaigns
  • Proven track record of securing press in all media (print, radio, television, and social/digital)
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills (writing samples are required)
  • Ability to understand and synthesize complex policies for reporters and other audiences
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously and work well under tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of Cision, Mailchimp, Microsoft Office 360, and other basic computer functions
  • Knowledge of and experience with digital media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.) strategies
  • Ability to work independently and as a team-player in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Must have strong organizational and management skills
  • Spanish language skills a plus but not required
  • If a driver, must have a valid driver’s license with proof of automobile insurance coverage
  • Ability to work respectfully with people from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

The position requires certain physical and mental demands, including the following:
  • Ability to detect, discern, recognize, and perceive auditory and visual information within normal ranges
